1. Wander Through Diocletian's Palace
Most of the world's great Roman monuments are roped off and ticketed. Split's is a neighbourhood. Walking through Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the living heart of the Old Town, costs nothing at all. You can lose an hour in its marble lanes, duck through 1,700-year-old archways, and emerge onto bustling little squares lined with cafés.
You only pay if you step inside specific monuments such as the cathedral, the bell tower or the underground cellars. The streets, courtyards and the famous Peristyle square themselves are free to explore at any hour, and they're at their most magical early in the morning or late at night when the day-trippers have gone.
2. Stand in the Peristyle & Hear Klapa in the Vestibule
The Peristyle, the colonnaded courtyard at the centre of the palace, is the single most impressive free spot in Split, a Roman ceremonial square where you can sit on the ancient steps and simply take it in. Just off it, the domed Vestibule has near-perfect acoustics, and most days you'll find a klapa group, Croatia's traditional a cappella singers, filling the space with harmony.
Standing under that open dome listening to klapa echo off the stone is one of those goosebump travel moments, and it doesn't cost a cent (though tossing a coin or buying their CD is a kind gesture if you linger).
3. Stroll the Riva Promenade
The palm-lined Riva is the social heart of Split, and an evening passeggiata along it is a free ritual the whole city takes part in. Watch the ferries glide in and out of the harbour, see the white stone of the palace walls glow at sunset, and people-watch with the locals.

4. Rub the Toe of the Gregory of Nin Statue
Just outside the palace's Golden Gate stands the towering bronze statue of Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski), a medieval bishop, by the celebrated sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Local legend says that rubbing the statue's big toe, now polished to a bright shine by millions of hands, brings good luck and ensures you'll return to Split one day.

Split's public beaches, from the lively sands of Bačvice to the pine-shaded coves around Marjan, are free to enjoy. Bring a towel, a bottle of water and some shade, and you can swim in the clear Adriatic all day for nothing.

7. Play Picigin at Bačvice
Picigin is Split's own beach game, invented right here at Bačvice over a century ago: players stand in the shallow sandy water and keep a small ball from touching the surface with acrobatic dives and slaps. It's free, it's joyful, and it's deeply local.

It feels genuinely lived-in rather than touristy, and the soft evening light on its old stone makes it a photographer's dream.
